Trouble Speaking in a Group?

Mama was in Toastmasters International for over 20 years. The first time I showed up at a meeting, I was terrified.

Most of us are called upon to speak in a group setting, be it a team meeting at work, church, a club meeting or even a toast at a special occasion.

Here are some easy tips for beginners to keep in mind.

  • If you have a chance, practice what you are going to say.
  • Notes are okay, but please do not read your speech. No one wants to see you with your head bowed looking at the content of your speech.
  • If you need a moment to remember the next line...SHUT YOUR MOUTH. Please don't use "fillers" like umm, er...so...and...
  • Relax! Your audience is on your side. They want to hear what you have to say.
  • When you complete your talk, don't say, "Thank You." Your audience should be thanking you! Hopefully you will get lots of applause.
You can visit Toastmasters.org to find a club near you. Learn, make new friends and have fun.

Cheers!
